In case any of you have forgotten, here is a quote from Rick Taylor's press
release announcing his retirement:
"In a sports world where second-guessing by people who have neither
responsibility for decisions nor have ever been in the arena has become an art form, I
can honestly say I have always tried to do right by the institution I have
worked for and the people with whom I have been associated."
This quote captured what was wrong with Rick Taylor - he was overly defensive
and had nothing but disdain for Northwestern fans and alumni. Given this
disdain for "second-guessing" alumni like us, I'm not so sure the interests of
Northwestern did not take a back seat to the interests of Rick Taylor.
In addition, Rick Taylor hired Kevin O'Neill, couldn't get along with Gary
Barnett and paid O'Neill double Barnett's post Rose Bowl salary of $430,000. If
getting new facilities built was all there was to Rick Taylor's job, we could
have hired a Project Managment firm instead of an Athletic Director.
