Robert
Welcome to the list.
I hope this won't be your last post.
I appreciate your opinion, but let me expand on it a little bit.
First, this would be a pretty dull place if the only ones who were
allowed to post were those who met your defnition (no offense intended
to ex-players or ex-coaches). It would be an online version of
Pleasantville, where everyone was the same and thought the same.
Fortunately it's not like that. We have Mike Nolan and all of the other
list posters to thank for the fact that we can have diversity of opinion
without it all collapsing into distasteful rants and the sort of
personal attacks like the one you directed at me. If this level of
opinion is still too much for you, I suggest you start your own
Pleasantville list and you can apply whatever rules you would like to
that list.
Second, there is the temptation in your message to engage in a little
chest bumping with regard to the experience I bring to the board. You
don't know me. You don't know anything about my years of playing and
coaching. You don't know anything about the number of kids from our
little corner of Michigan that have attended NU. You just happen to
disagree with what I may have said and assumed everything else.
Fortunately, you don't have to pass a loyalty test to post on this
board. The only test for posters is their ability to carry on a civil
discussion. I'm grateful for that.
Finally, since you are a relatively new poster, you may not realize that
there is a lot of history on this list too. I leaned pretty hard on Roy
this past week for public remarks that I thought were out of character
for him. I felt I had some leeway to do that because he and I have
corresponded for so many years and continue to carry on a private
correspondence exploring some private aspects of some of our public
exchanges. We don't always agree on things, but still respect each
other. Similarly, Stephen and I have come a welcome mutual
understanding with regard to the opportunities this next year present to
test some difference of opinion that we have about coaching changes.
You see it is possible to disagree with someone strongly and still
respect them as a person and their right to hold opinions which may
differ from yours. This list is one of the places where we attempt to
put those ideals into practice.
Again welcome,
Jeff

Either buy your tickets and support the program(s) or go on the rant board and offer your comments---judgments---but ease off on the second guessing when you do not have the expertise/experience to come to reasonable conclusions.
