Thanks Chuck!
I have no idea what Lou Saban did - does anyone remember ? He was back
coaching at Western Illinois a year or so later.
After his stint at WIU, wherever that is, didn't Lou win an AFL title in
Buffalo, something Marv Levy never did?
1980 Rick Venturi was definitely fired by Bob Strotz (John Pont as AD also).
Correct, I ran into Rick when he was an assistant in New Orleans and he said
the days in Evanston were the low point of his professional life. With a
record of 1-31-1 I would guess so.
1991 Fran Peay
Interesting stuff given the firing at the Evil Empire
Francis Peay, who played tackle for the Packers from 1968-'72, was the
second black head coach in football to be hired in the Big Ten Conference. Peay
was hired by Northwestern University in 1986 and coached there until 1991.
Peay succeeded Dennis Green, who was the first black head coach hired for
football in the Big Ten. Green coached the Wildcats from 1981-'85 and later
went on to coach at Stanford starting in 1989, where he became the first black
head coach in football in the Pacific 10.
A chart included in Richard Lapchick's "2003 Racial and Gender Report Card"
says there have been 17 African-American men who, through Feb. 15, 2003, have
been hired as head coaches in the history of Division I-A football. Three of
the coaches have been hired twice by schools: Green (Northwestern,
Stanford), Ron Cooper (Eastern Michigan, Louisville) and Tyrone Willingham (Stanford,
Notre Dame).
