Mike, you could have just said "JON DOESN"T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT"… or maybe you did that, but in a more diplomatic fashion.
You need to look at the rule you quoted "multiple players from the same team can't wear the same number…" in conjunction with the rule above it "players that change numbers while a game is being played must report to the referee, who will then announce it".
It's called, informally, the "Lane Kiffin" rule because last year Kiffin had his backup QB switch jerseys during a game, when the backup QB switched jerseys from his regular #6 to #35 (same number as his punter) against Colorado during a two-point conversion play.
So… yeah, the way I have it worded is incorrect or misleading. Players can have the same #, but not switch during games without someone knowing, and you cannot have two numbers at the same position, ala Lane Kiffin.
I should have used the explanation that Mike Nolan uses, which comes from the official NCAA release, but some times we (I have a turd in my pocket?) get so immersed in this stuff that I assume everyone knows what a slimy cretin Lane Kiffin is, and what he does to try to get around the rules even though he did what he did against Colorado.
Colorado, for crying out loud.
Lane Kiffin is going to make more money next year than everyone on this list. That's a bloody shame.
