Last night's game was pretty fun. The NU men's basketball team closed
out its history in the Bob Devaney Sports Center with a nice win over
Minnesota. The crowd was great, officially over 13K. That probably was
paid admission, but the crowd was to the top of the bleacher seats.
They honored the all-Devaney team at half time, with Hoppen,
Piatkowski, and Strickland in attendance. Tim Miles wound up the crowd
after the game. He said they'd take the game ball, paint it with the
score as the last game at Devaney and the names of the seniors. The
three seniors, Almeida, Talley, and Ubel, all had great games. Talley
was his usual stalwart self, playing the point, though that isn't his
position, and solid defense. Almeida was huge in the first half and
made his presence felt in the second half when he cleared the lane for
a Ubel drive to the basket when the game was in doubt. Ubel was
scoreless in the first half but scored big three point plays (basket
and fouls) and sank free throws to cement the win. Minnesota heaved up
a half-court shot at the buzzer to cut the margin to two points, but it
didn't matter. I am not that nostalgic about the venue, but it will be
a pretty good Husker memory.
