'Bama is on a roll now, but all good things come to an end, often
with a thud. Will there be an NCAA scandal uncovered, will their
coach move to the NFL?
Too bad the Big Ten was still hiding its head in the sand back in
the 90's and the meeting of unbeaten Nebraska and Michigan couldn't
happen.
I still feel Oklahoma's dominance of the mid-50's (4 losses in 7 years and
three consecutive undefeated seasons) is still at the top of my dynasty
list, but picking between 'Bama and Nebraska for 2nd place is tough.
Nebraska was undefeated three times, including back-to-back seasons, and
running an offense that much of the world labeled 'archaic', but if the
last few seasons have shown anything it is that even the great teams can
lose on any given Saturday in this world where parity means that nearly
any school can break into the top 25.
Like Oklahoma's streak in the 50's, Nebraska's 3 losses between 1993 and
1997 (paired with 60 wins) may never be duplicated, not even in Tuscaloosa.
In the past five years, Alabama has gone 61-7, so Nebraska still wins
by a nose.
Lou Holtz was talking in the post-game show (talk about someone
who should be forcibly retired!) about how when 'Bama played Notre Dame
for the NC back when he was coaching the Irish, all the media wanted to
was interview or photograph Bear Bryant. I don't think Lou Saban has
reached that level yet, and likely will never reach it.
