The reason that courts do not render a verdict of innocent is that in America there is a presumption of innocence. Therefore, you can only be proven guilty or not guilty. And it is only the prosecution that has to prove the defendant is guilty. The defendant does not prove that they did not do it.

You're right.  There is a difference.  I am not an attorney but I don't think a court can render a verdict of "innocent".  
 
I believe it is always guilty or not guilty.  In my own words innocent means one didn't do what one is charged with.  

Not guilty means the prosecution wasn't able to prove the defendant is guilty.  It is not saying the defendant didn't do it.
