There's a difference between "innocent" or "not guilty".  I don't think they 
could prove the initial assault charge.  They did have more eyewitnesses for the 
arrest.

You're right.  There is a difference.  I am not an attorney but I don't think a court can render a verdict of "innocent".  
 
I believe it is always guilty or not guilty.  In my own words innocent means one didn't do what one is charged with.  

Not guilty means the prosecution wasn't able to prove the defendant is guilty.  It is not saying the defendant didn't do it.
