I'm not sure these assertions are true. Sometimes, things get inside a
team's or a player's psyche can have a negative impact. I think that
happened recently when NU wanted to beat Texas so badly. In the 1970s,
it sure appeared as if OU had NU's number no matter what else was
involved. One year, it was reported that Switzer said "please don't
let the best team (meaning NU) win", but OU came away with another
victory. On the other hand, I thought I just read a news story about a
study of revenge games and the conclusion was that there wasn't a
statistical basis for any difference in outcomes (or maybe I just have
a false memory).

I agree with some of what was said about Martinez with respect to it
still is something of a question if he can raise his game in the midst
of pressure in an important game. Sometimes he has, but sometimes he
hasn't. Of course, before this year, experience was something of an
issue, but the second half of the UCLA game (in his junior year) wasn't
stellar. So, is it unwise to rachet up the game for Martinez and NU?
I guess we might know more on Saturday, but who really knows what games
turn on (other than skill, execution, conditioning, preparation,
etc.)?
