I'm not trolling here, but define "character".

>From all reports Bo runs a clean program.  He is concerned with following
the rules.  He makes sure players go to class.   He seems to care about
doing his best to give his staff as much "work/life balance" as is possible
in his profession.  At a personal level, he has no (as far as I know)
significant off-field issues.  While some may not agree with his choices,
he seems to evaluate his staff and isn't afraid to make changes to it if he
feels it's required (e.g. Shawn Watson).

Has he gotten emotional on the sidelines?  Sure.  Is that one point (which
IMHO seems to be on the decline) significant enough to substantiate the
claim that "...he utterly lacks character..."?  Not in my book, but that's
why I ask what your definition of "character" is.

As to the claim that "...he's not that good a coach...", again arguments
can be claimed the other way.  Especially if you look back a Osborne's
record in the late 70's especially.  Are there things that he could do
better?  Absolutely.  And I suspect that in a candid discussion Bo might
very well be the first person to say that.  Hell, I think that when he
blames himself after a loss saying that he and his staff were out coached,
he's saying he could and needs to improve.

Let's say that 10-3, 9-4 is what his average season will be.  Considering
everything else in the program is clean (let's take that as a given for
this argument), is that enough to fire him?  Perhaps, but perhaps not.
Nebraska as a football school as limitations.  It's not in a populous
state, so much recruit far and wide.  It's not particularly well known for
it's academic rigor and prestige, so it can't leverage that.  It's not in a
particularly desirable location (cold winters, no beaches, no large metro
sophisticated area, etc) so it has that to overcome as well.  Does that
mean we CAN'T recruit good enough players?  Of course not, but it's just
that much harder to do so on a regular basis.

If we get rid of Bo, who's getting 10-3, 9-4 seasons on average who are we
going to get to come in here and GUARANTEE to do better?  Consistently.  I
don't know, I'm sure some will say those coaches are out there and they may
very well be.  But to some extent, every new coach is a crap shoot.  I
wasn't all that thrilled when they hired Callahan (for several reasons) but
no way did I believe that he was going to bring the program as far down as
he did.

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
