I know that to be a legal formation, you must have at least 7 on the line.
Also, I've seen the wide outs look and point to the official on the sideline and the official will touch his cap if the wideout is on the line, thus lined up correctly. So in that case, the official IS telling the player that they are or are not on the line.

Do you mean that the line judge will indicate before the snap that he is about to call an illegal formation? I have never noticed this (guess I was never watching for it)
