In large part because the best team in the conference (Ohio State) and
what may be the second best team (Penn State, factoring out their first
two games) are unrankable by the coaches.

There may also be some evidence that AP voters and others are intentionally
downgrading Penn State and its player for poll and post-season honors
purposes. And that's just not fair to the players.

Also, Michigan has two losses, to the #1 and #5 teams in the country. Please
name another school that played TWO non-conference games against schools
anywhere near that good.

Anyway, the Big Ten has a long history of being competitive to the
point of beating each other up and knocking the conference out of
the national championship picture, and that hasn't changed. This year's
non-conference schedule was a trainwreck, though, even after factoring
out losses against top 5 schools.
