I believe the movement is to four 16 team conferences. Probably the Pac, SEC, Atlantic and Big 10. Bye Bye Big 12. They will split to Pac, SEC and Big Ten. Sorry Texas, but your better fine a home and not a sovereign.
This would facilitate a two game championship from the winners from each conference unless like this year, the Big 10 wouldn't qualify any school. then another selection would have to be made.
A 16 conference paring would be 7 from your division and 5 from the other. In this manner, a team is required to play 75% of their conference. In the Big Ten this would play hell with the old traditional games, but hey, isn't it better to play as many of the schools as possible to REALLY determine the conference championship.
I don't foresee an 18 conference team, This would only allow 8 division games and 4 other division games. Not measuring the whole conference as well as 16 teams.
Now a draw back from this is the loss of revenue from the four teams usually scheduled for the tootsy role on our schedule today. I believe Nebraska paid $600,000 for each school, and yes, that is big bucks to these schools.
Another point to consider is the fact this would designate three major pool games each year, two for the first round and one for the final. Of course the bowls could take and share this each year (grin). The team left out that year would get the next biggest draw from the remaining bunch.
You know, my feeling is this increasing the conference sizes will create far more problems and uncertainty in the years to come.
