I disagree that it is necessarily ugly. There are more options, which
might be better. One of the reasons I miss the Big 8 is that it was
more local, but another was that it was smaller so every team could
play every other team. I don't like the fact that in the larger
conferences, teams play unequal schedules.
With 16 teams, you could make subdivisions of four teams that always
play each other. In each two-year period the subdivisions would be
joined in a division and then joined differently in the next two-year
period. One period, it would be East+North and West+South, then
East+South and West+North. Another period might have East+West and
North+South, or you might just play those teams only in out-of-division
games.
That would be seven in-division games that would count for the division
title. Then, you could have one or two other conference games, either
with traditional rivals in a subdivision that you aren't playing and/or
to rotate through teams in a subdivision that is never in your division
(e.g., East vs West if those subdivisions aren't ever joined). Of course,
you still have issues of balance between subdivisions and divisions, but
if only in-division games are counted for the division championship, then
that isn't such a big issue.
This keeps games between the geographically closest teams and rotates
through the rest of the conference in a more even manner. Note that
this could be done with the current 14 teams if two subdivisions have
four teams and two subdivisions have three teams and the divisions
always pair a four-team subdivision with a three-team subdivision.
At the present, the conference is basically a vehicle for bundling
television games, so it may not be important that Nebraska plays
Rutgers and/or Maryland very often. Think of it more like pro sports.
At one point, teams in different MLB leagues didn't ever play each
other unless it was in the World Series. Now, there are some
inter-league games, but not so many. The same in the NFL --- small
divisions and cross-divisional games that change year to year.
