[Husker] Martinez Co-Offensive Player of the Week, Time set for Mi nnesota

I saw a blog on the journal start that I'm stealing from Brian
Christopherson that I'm including below. I hope I'm not breaking any
copyright laws.
My feeling is that Taylor is our quarterback and he will be next year as
well until he gets hurt. Bo has made it clear he is our guy and I don't
think we have any great alternatives below him on the depth chart that are
ready to play just yet. I don't think he is as explosive as he was as a
redshirt freshman before his ankle injury but his top speed is probably
pretty close to what it was. I think he is still a work in progress
throwing the ball and has clearly reverted back to some old habits under
pressure but that's probably to be expected. At times, I think as a third
year starter, no excuses, he really needs to be better but then he goes and
wins a few games for you making some ridiculous plays doing so. It says
something too when he goes on his own and hires Steve Calhoun with his own
dollar.
I thought the reason we won all those championships and big games in the
90's was because of Tommie Frazier. Not because he was such a special
athlete but because of his attitude. He had a lot of NFL talent around him
(more than we do now) and was a 5 star talent himself but he believed/knew
he was going to win every time he stepped on the field. He willed it to
happen and the players all believed it and grabbed hold of that and won a
lot of games. He himself was injured half the season and didn't play but
he got the team to believe like he did. I don't think Taylor has quite the
same level of unshakable belief in himself but it says a lot to throw 3
interceptions in a game, 2 costing you points on the board and not let it
get to you. To come back and drive the field to win the game regardless of
whatever penalties. On the road, In that Environment. He is a gamer and
the reason we came back to win against Michigan State and Northwestern.
Don
Here is what Brian Cristopherson had to say after scanning the wire from
Michigan state....
I've often thought many fans and some of us media members who pay close
notice to Husker football get so caught up in some of Taylor Martinez's
quirks that we often miss a really, really big point: The quarterback is an
absolute pain in the butt for opposing defensive coaches.
The kind of threat that puts bags under a coach's eyes and worry in his
thoughts.
Sometimes you're so close to something, it's hard to see how others not
close to it see the same thing.
So I was interested to hear and read some of the comments from Michigan
State's side of the fence after Saturday's game.
The Spartans saw all sides of Martinez -- the quarterback who can kill you
with his feet (205 yards rushing), the quarterback who throws a few he
shouldn't (three interceptions), the quarterback who got them at the end
(80 yards in 1:14).
"He's a great player," said Michigan State senior defensive tackle Tyler
Hoover. "You have to hand it to him, that's all I can say, he is great."
I also found *this
write-up<http://www.freep.com/article/20121104/BLOG05/121104001/Hey-Joe-10-thoughts-from-Michigan-State-s-loss-to-Nebraska>
* interesting from Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press.
Check out Point No. 3, particularly at the end.
That's where Rexrode writes: *And Taylor Martinez is really, really good.*
*MSU held Martinez to 23 yards on 12 carries last season. He toted it 17
times for 205 yards and two touchdowns Saturday, looking extremely fast
doing it.*
*That even allowed Narduzzi to take a shot at U-M’s Denard Robinson, for
some reason.*
*“He’s faster than Denard,” MSU defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi said of
Martinez, “even though (Robinson) thinks he’s faster than (Usain) Bolt or
whatever. He’s flat-out faster.”*
I don't know who wins the race. I don't.
But Martinez sure did win the respect of some Spartans on Saturday. And
maybe a few more skeptics around here, too.
