Ignoring the fact that Stafford was pushed (and the refs don't get
"excused" simply because they didn't see it...that's their job), the
flag shouldn't have been thrown for two reasons:
1.) Stafford did everything in his power to stop. If he wanted to, he
could have demolished the QB. As it was, the contact was incidental at
best. It was rather obvious that he wasn't targeting the QB, and it was
rather obvious that the QB wasn't even bothered by the hit.
2.) If the band hadn't been crammed on the field, then the collision
probably wouldn't have even happened. There would have been plenty of
space.
Again, this is the type of mickey-mouse garbage that we will keep seeing
so long as the NCAA and the Big Ten keep being over-protective of the
players. At this rate, we will be watching flag football in 20 years.
