A comment which is secondary to your main point...The NU band has chairs which they could use rather than stand if they wanted.
I have a hard time believing that MSU thought NU would only bring a pep band because the NU band performed on the field for both the pregame and halftime shows.
They were in a potential danger zone.

A friend of mine suggested that the band being on the sidelines my have something to do with a B1G rule regarding the number of seats allotted to a visiting team.    Maybe MSU was expecting only a pep band for the "Skers and didn't leave enough seats so the kids had to stand up on the sideline from start to finish  . . . empty seats in the stadium notwithstanding!
Seemed like a potential liability problem to me.
