My father-in-law always used to say that it'd be really boring if the
other team wasn't there.

Similarly, close games are far more interesting than blowouts, unless
you have friends on the 4th team.  

I remember when we went to the Northwestern v. USC Rose Bowl.  We passed
by a group of USC fans at their tailgate on the way into the stadium, being 
obnoxious as USC fans often are.  We happened to pass by the same group on 
the way back to the bus, and went out of our way to walk over and congratulate 
them on a hard-fought victory.

They were dumbfounded.  I guess they don't see good manners very often.
