I doubt it could be made to work.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the timing of the SMU Death Penalty case.

The violations that eventually resulted in the Death Penalty were uncovered
by a Dallas TV station, their first report aired in June of 1986.

SMU's report to the NCAA was delivered on February 6, 1987.

The sanctions were announced by the NCAA on February 26, 1987. The 1987
season was cancelled in its entirety. SMU's home games for 1988 were
cancelled, their away games were not cancelled by the NCAA, though SMU
announced on April 11th that they would cancel the 1988 season.

All players on the SMU roster were given a full release. Over half of
the scholarship players on the SMU roster at the time of the sanctions
transferred to other schools.

After the SWC dissolved, largely on the back of the SMU Death Penalty,
SMU was a team without a conference. They wound up in the WAC before
moving to CUSA in 2005.

SMU was also hit with the loss of 55 scholarships over four years and
it was 1992 before they had a full roster of scholarships players again,
and they didn't make a bowl appearance until 2009.
