[Husker] BCS and the regular season

We've all probably seen the articles in the last few days that the BCS is
looking to make changes to itself. But over and over again they keep
saying "we must protect the regular season" and "the significance of the
regular season is paramount" , etc. So I started to think "what is
different about the football regular season that makes it so significant?"
Well, about the only difference I could come up with is that it is the only
sport where you have to stare at polls all season to see who will play in
the NC game. There may be something else, but I couldn't think of it, so
someone by all means clue me in.
So I thought...OK, currently we have a two team playoff, right? Very
quickly as the season progresses, less and less games have any meaningful
impact on the two spots for the playoff. As the season goes on, a really
small percentage of all the games played have any impact on which two teams
will make the playoffs. By seasons end, only a handful of games has any
impact on the two team playoff...which is what the BCS gives us..right?
(BCS bowl games? Please...that is just hype and money).
So what if there were a 4 team playoff? 4 slots available to play for the
NC. More teams have a shot, more games that have meaning as to who gets
in. So if there are more meaningful games, why is does that diminish the
regular season? 8 teams...more important games, more huge impact games.
Again, how is the importance of the regular season diminished?
I admit, I don't get it.
Nebraska played exactly zero games in 2011 that had an impact on whether
they would go to the two team playoff. Didn't diminish them one iota for
me. In fact, if they had been playing for a slot in a 4 or 8 or whatever
tournament (have to stop somewhere), I would have been even more pumped.
The BCS is about the NC game. So if you only have 4 or 5 teams that have a
chance as the season goes along, then that makes the regular more important
than if you have 12-15 teams or so with a chance?
Someone tell me what I am missing because I think the BCS is selling a lot
of crap with this "we must preserve the importance of the regular season."
