[Husker] Husker Dan editorial

In some sense, nearly all of us will be "conflicted" at least until NU wins
the BCS championship and probably some will be conflicted even after that.

I'm sure Bo and others in the program are conflicted. I'm sure the coaches
have satisfaction in some things this year and are not satisfied with some
things this year. I'm sure it's the same for the players.

What I object to in the column by Husker Dan and other like-minded fans
is how they react to that conflict. I just don't see that unbalanced
rhetoric with hyperbolic criticism ("meltdown") and overly emotional
reactions ("embarrassing") is interesting or reasonable in dealing with
that conflict. And, I really object to his claiming the whole of Huskerdom
for his bully pulpit.

What I appreciate in fans is objective analysis and constructive suggestions
(such as your examination of the past and your suggestion of patience based
on that analysis).

What I expect of Bo is that he will engage in effective examination and make
changes that result in even more success. No coach or program is going to
be perfect in every aspect --- the key is to efficiently reduce the most
relevant shortcomings. In that, only hard work over time will be effective,
so those who sit on the sideline should give those who have to do the hard
work a little time. In the meantime, a little more cheering and a little
less smearing would be nicer.

> I personally am conflicted as I want national championships too.  Conversely, I was against firing Tom Osborne back in the late 80's and early 90's when people were calling for his head.  I even remember when there was a petition circulating to have Bob Devaney removed as coach in '68 after two 6-4 seasons.  I was unhappy when Frank Solich was fired after one mediocre seasons when it appeared that he had turned things around with a 9-3 regular season.

> I'm not sure that Pelini will ever get to the national title level, but I don't believe we have given him an adequate chance to find out.  I can see some shortcomings - his choices of loyalty over experience in hiring assistants is aggravating, but similar to choices made by TO.  His recruiting classes seem less than nationally competitive, but still prefer his results to those of Callahan. His sideline antics are very un-Nebraska like, but he has the loyalty of his players -- and greatly preferred over the indifference to losing that we saw from BC.

> As long as the nine game minimum wins continue, I support the Pelini staff even without national or conference titles.  It took longer for TO to win his first conference title and Big 8 was definitely easier than the Big 12 or BigTen conferences.

> And presumably there are no pedophiles or other improprieties happening under his watch.
