I know one of the things that I appreciated about the TO era was that
Nebraska fans (though often frustrated) allowed him to grow and improve
into the coach he became.
In my opinion, there are three ways to get a great college football coach:
1) Buy them (a la Alabama and Texas), 2) Grow them (a la Tom Osborne), or
3) Keep hiring and firing until you eventually get lucky. It is unlikely
that NU is going to be buying coaches any time soon, and option three leads
to many more bad coaches before you find a good one.
I therefore think option 2 is the best, though it takes patience. The added
advantage of this option is that the respect, confidence, and loyalty that
is shown to the coach, can be reciprocated.
