After Dirk Chatelain's hit piece on Taylor Martinez, Lee Barfknecht responded to Bo Pelini's criticism of Chatelain by saying that they were the biggest media outlet in the state, and they were going to write whatever they felt like. Which is certainly their perogative (and First Amendment right, by the way)...that doesn't make them above criticism either.
I don't mind Jon Nyatawa and Rich Kaipust on their staff, and Tom Shatel is usually pretty good. Sam McKewon is easily the best football writer on the World-Herald's staff.
Personally, I think the Journal-Star does a better job of covering Nebraska football than the World-Herald with about half the staff.
As for the "paywall"...it's easily bypassed. Switch over to Mozilla Firefox and use "Private Browsing". It will throw off the World-Herald's ability to track how many articles you've read.

Sam McKowen used to write for Husker Locker and Nebraska State Paper. I still like him much better than the hacks that are at OWH, but I have noticed some changes also. I'm sure the guru sports guy at OWH is trying to influence his writing. I still find the Lincoln Journal-Star commentary better. It seems the OWH has the misguided thought that they are "the most important paper" in Nebraska. I think they have slide a long way from the days when they tried to report the news instead of manufacture it!

Tweets from OWH writers with links to OWH yielded the same result. I live on the east coast and I am not going to pay $9.95 a month for the "premium" content.

Did Sam McKewon only recently join the OWH? I seem to recall his writing for someone else a couple years ago. At that time I enjoyed reading him as much as any of the writers, but it seems his style or tone or something has changed and I have not found him as good a read lately. It makes me wonder if the OWH powers that be have been having an influence on him.
