[Husker] Osborne Interview

Excellent reading.

There are a couple of quotes I particularly liked:

"*There probably are people who could have done better and maybe some who
could have done worse. I've done the best I could*."
"*S**ometimes you attend NCAA meetings and conference meetings and you're
not sure you're at an athletic-related meeting or at a bank meeting.*"

I took away the feeling that Tom Osborne remains a humble person but even
now remains a cross between mindfulness and intensity in the expectation of
excellence. By that I mean he expects the same of himself as those around
him -- to do that best that they can. I love that quality in him and my
understanding from several people who worked in or around the athletic
department in the 90's is that what you see is actually who he is.

He reminds me of a drill instructor I had in basic training. One day during
a drill my mind was wandering and he noticed. After we stopped he came up
close but didn't scream into my face for audience approval. Rather he
quietly, in a voice only he and I could hear, explained his expectations
and inquired as to whether I would repeat that lapse.

Year ago I had a conversation with a former player who had a very similar
story in that Coach Osborne explained (away from the entirety of the team)
something negative he was doing and that should it not improve there were
probably people behind him who would be anxious to try their hand at his
number 1 spot. The same player went on to say that years after the fact he
was still in touch with him and appreciated the lessons and example set by
Coach Osborne.
