If you believe the recruiting experts (and there really isn't a reason not to in this situation), players really love the Oregon uniforms. I must be starting to become old and fuddy-duddy, because most of Oregon's uniforms as of late look ridiculous.  (Though I must admit that their Rose Bowl chrome helmet, while probably hazardous on the field, looks really good on the sideline and would look great on a bookshelf.)

 
My understanding is that adidas is paying the University to wear a new design, though Osborne and the athletic department have to approve any revised design.  And after the game, they can auction off the jerseys for an additional profit.

Oh it's definitely for financial reasons, mostly for the Sports Apparel 
company (Nike, Addidas, etc.)  They supply a few hundred uniforms to the 
University teams for free, so that thousands of fans will buy their 
jerseys at premium prices. If they can convince the University that 
alternate uniforms are cool, then fans that like variety will buy more 
than one style of jersey.

It's marketing genius!
