Oh it's definitely for financial reasons, mostly for the Sports Apparel
company (Nike, Addidas, etc.) They supply a few hundred uniforms to the
University teams for free, so that thousands of fans will buy their
jerseys at premium prices. If they can convince the University that
alternate uniforms are cool, then fans that like variety will buy more
than one style of jersey.
It's marketing genius!
