[Husker] NY Times analysis on conference realignment

Mike -

It was an interesting read. I would agree with some of the commentors that
the statistical analysis and the source for those statistics may be
problematic. When they started with the Google search statistics, my red
flags went up (how many times do I do a search on "college football" - like,
never!). But their point was to get at a rough estimation of fandom and
where its located, and then look at how realignment may look good/bad for
conferences. Again, they indicate Notre Dame would be a natural for the Big
Ten, but they do misstate Notre Dame's ability to get into the BCS. They
are already an automatic qualifier even as an independent - the only
independent that is. All they have to do is be ranked 8th at the end of the
year and they play in a BCS bowl; that doesn't even consider the payouts
they receive from the BCS regardless of their ranking.

It is very interesting to see Nebraska's ranking nationally, and within the
B1G. And how small some school's fan base is, even if the stats are
debatable. And how small a pull college teams seem to have in the
Northeast.
