I haven't done that for years.  The archives are open to the public these
days, though.  

It's mostly a bandwidth issue.  Recently I had someone send a SHORT text
reply to a message, but all the assorted cruft that got attached to his
message by his mailer (in HTML segments) made it add up to over a megabyte 
in length!

There was a time, 20 years ago, when USENET was referred to as a 
'video game for people who still know how to read'.  I'm not sure 
that applies to most of the Internet these days. :sigh:
