If you begin to reinforce behavior without the behavior being
demonstrated...the reinforcer loses its value.

In other words...If you give out a Blackshirt, but the defense has not
earned the Blackshirt, then you have diminished the reinforcement value of
the Blackshirt. The individuals associate the Blackshirt with mediocre
performance.

Or in other words...if I give a child who is an average student a Corvette
to encourage them to be a great student, then I have now upped the
reinforcer to a Porsche, because a Corvette is associated with mediocre
performance.

So, I suggest a Snickers bar for their performance.
