OK.
After watching this team for the first four games, the outcome v. Wisconsin is not unexpected from my view. We have taken some steps backwards compared to last year.
So after seeing this team after five games, here is what we will need to learn to live with this year, like it or not
1. Our defensive line is slower than usual, especially the ends. This will be exploited by mobile quarterbacks all year long and by teams who can seal the end and then with a back who is good enough to recognize to bounce things outside.
2. Our linebackers, despite being hyped in the preseason, are average. There are flashes of greatness from David, but both he and Compton do not plug the hole, but instead react once the ball carrier is at the line of scrimmage. I did not notice this so much last year, which leads me to think that there is a slightly different defensive scheme being taught. Perhaps, it is because we are lacking that hybrid player like Hagg. Or should I say that David is probably that hybrid player but he must play the regular LB position.
3. Our d backs are less than average. This is mostly because they are young, not because they are not athletic. The deal is that they must react correctly at once or boom, they are beat. I dont think there is any confidence between the d backs who are on the field at the same time.
4. Martinez will only look at the primary receiver, and if not open, will tuck and run. If he never learns to look off the receiver, then you can expect more of the same if we get into pass necessary situations.
Wants
A. I want fast defensive ends like I see in the SEC who can actually run with the QB. Notice I said run with not run down. Our d ends fall behind. If you can at least run with a mobile quarterback they feel pressure, but you saw no pressure versus Wilson. If this does not get fixed with a change in scheme, please expect losses to Michigan and perhaps Penn State.
B. I want Martinez to be put into shorter roll out passing situations. But, not the type where he is passing on the run......you saw tonight that he throws behind the receiver when doing that more than normal. Take advantage of his speed....roll him out but then stop, look, plant and throw. And if that doesnt work, then put Burkhead in wildcat......he can throw.....he played some qb in high school.
C. I want linebackers who can stuff a hole. Can Eric Martin play linebacker.......I suppose the coaches might have already thought of that.
It will be interesting next Saturday. Battle of teams going in the wrong direction. Ohio State gets four very important players back after their suspensions. I do not feel good about much right now. Much is unsettling.
