Public or professional likeability and private likeability aren't
interchangeable, and it isn't clear which, if either, is necessary
for on-the-field success.

If private likeability was all it took to succeed, then Turner Gill should
be the national coach of the year instead of being out the door at Kansas.

The public personna that Bill C presented was one that many Husker fans
just refused to like. How much of that was his "We have to change
what Nebraska is' philosophy is unclear, it is also unclear how much
of that philosophy was being dictated to him by his boss.

BTW, I heard a lot of similar complaints about the public likeability
of former Husker play-by-play caller Warren Swain, whose biggest flaw
might have been that he was neither Kent Pavelka or Lyell Bremser.
(However, someone I know who was at one of Warren't first public
appearances described him as having an ego big enough to fill Memorial
Stadium.)

That neither Pavelka or Bremser were very accurate play-by-play announcers
is a separate issue. Back in the 70's, before there was a monopoly on
broadcast rights, the Omaha World Herald did an analysis of all the
play-by-play announcers for the Husker games. The most accurate was
Don Gill. FWIW, I do know Don personally, he is one of the nicest guys
I know. Back in those days I knew a number of fans who would listen to
Bremser but switch over to Gill on KLIN after critical moments to find
out what really happened. (BTW, I always thought KFOR's advertising
campaign for Dick Perry as 'Mr Excitment' was surreal, he was about
as exciting as listening to the hog market reports at 6AM.)

Outside of sports, I can think of people I know and like but whom I
would NEVER want to work with, either as a co-worker or as my supervisor.
Conversely, I can think of someone I really dislike personally but
whom I would have no qualms about working for.
