Osborne was also the offensive coordinator, so he had called the plays 
for both of Nebraska's national championships and had a hand in
recruiting all the players on the team.  

Pelini's one season at Nebraska and one game as interim head coach
were ancient history by the time he took over as head coach.  The
players and coaches he had worked were mostly gone by then.

However, to say that Osborne stepped into a much calmer program than 
Pelini did could be stretching things a bit.  He also had to replace 
several coaches who weren't happy about not being picked to suceed 
Devaney and left.

Yes, life was a lot simpler in 1972, but there was still lot of grumbling
about Osborne's inability to win bowl games, beat Oklahoma, and
contest for national championships during the first 15-18 years of his
tenure.  

My problem with Shatel's column is after I finished it I could not answer
this question about it:  What was the point of that article?
