Were ANY of the pieces written about why Penn State should cancel
the Nebraska game 'articles' under such a strict definition, even if
they appeared in the New York Times?

For that matter, it isn't always easy to figure out what was written
by accredited members of the media.

The first question may be 'accredited by whom?' I know of many colleges
who now routinely issue media passes to people who write exclusively
for the web, some of them for web sites not obviously tied in to a
newspaper or other new-reporting entity.

Not all of those being accredited have degrees in journalism, either.

Is an opinion piece entitled to be called an article?

Is something written by a columnist entitled to be called an article?

Is a blog post an article?

For all of the above, it might depend on who wrote it, or where it
was found, neither of which may be inherently obvious clues as to
its 'articleness'.

Figuring out an appropriate citation for something found on the
Internet isn't always easy, either.
