[Husker] Spoiled?

Off hand, I think two other things might be making it much harder for a
team to distance itself from the pack.
1. One advantage that NU had over many teams at least through the mid-90s
was our strength and conditioning program. Now, however, everyone has
access to that kind of information through the internet and most high
schools have weight rooms with enough equipment to significantly improve
the performance of athletes at that level. Some larger high schools have
weight rooms that rival the facilities that NU had in the 80s and 90s.
Hell, my daughter's junior high has a weight room and aerobic fitness room
that is well-equipped. I think it's safe to say that strength and
conditioning is pretty much a given at every level and any distinguishing
between schools here has more to do with the staff and the athletes than
the knowledge and facilities available to staff and athletes.
2. In a related issue, the widespread use of formal strength and
conditioning programs across the country and down to early grade levels has
increased the available pool of elite level athletes. In past decades, if
you weren't a top-25 team you weren't going to get the athletes with the
talent and training to put together a national championship caliber team.
Now, that pool is much larger and we're seeing the most obvious effects in
teams like TCU and BSU.
I'm not taking away anything from the coaches' responsibility for teaching
and preparing the teams. That is still the most important fact, IMO.
However, it is much more difficult to build an exceptional team now...not
because our players and our team aren't capable of that, but because the
playing field is much more level now.
It really does come down to parity.
