[Husker] Thoughts on the Football Season so far

Coach Pelini's first four seasons as Nebraska's head football coach are a lot like Tom Osborne's. We have been spoiled by Tom Osborne's final five seasons and tend to forget the preceding twenty. I believe like Coach Osborne, Coach Pelini will never win fewer than nine games a season.

Nebraska was in a really tough place this season. First, they moved to new conference. And as others on this list have posted, game play in the B1G is a lot different than in Big-XII. In addition, Nebraska is putting in a new offense. Finally, they are a young team.

If Nebraska beats Iowa, and I don't see any reason why they shouldn't, then they will have nine wins and potentially their third ten win season in a row. Coach Pelini has done a great job at the helm at Nebraska so far.

As for the loss at Michigan, I really thought that Nebraska would win this game. However, the game at Penn State was very physical and very emotional. Nebraska came a little more banged up. And while it looked like Michigan played some gamesmanship with QB Denard Robinson. He was more healthy and ready to play than pregame reports. Also, the pregame stats match up did show Michigan slightly ahead of Nebraska. Nebraska's special teams were a surprise yesterday. Turn overs were the story of the game. Much like the Wisconsin game, turn overs on the road will always kill you.

While I can understand throwing a flag on the attempted block punt, it should not have been a personal foul. That was probably the key play in the game. Instead of a stop giving the defense some much needed rest, Michigan kept the drive going and scored. However, Nebraska kept battling the entire game. If I had criticisms it would be that 1) the receivers have been mediocre the past two seasons; and 2) Nebraska gives up on the running game way too quickly. The three player triple option play was fun to watch. Nebraska needs to do more of this to 1) confuse the opposing team's defenses; 2) take the pressure off of Taylor Martinez; and 3) stop the defenses from keying on the QB or a single RB (which leads back to #1).

I admit that I wear my scarlet colored glasses and believe that any game is winnable by Nebraska. But at the end of the day, you have to realistic. It is amazing to me that nine wins three seasons in a row is considered sub par. One positive out of this season, if Nebraska beats Iowa they may come to Tempe, AZ to play at the Insight Bowl. Tempe is just north of Chandler, so I will definitely be there to watch. My son may be upset as over the past two seasons, we went to San Diego with a side trips to Legoland before attending the Holiday Bowl.

Hang in there true believers. Nebraska Football is on the rise and will be playing in B1G Championship games much to the chagrin of the rest of the conference. If Penn State goes on to represent the Leaders Division, then Nebraska will have beaten both teams in the Championship Game. Coach Pelini has turned the ship in the right direction and with him at the helm, Nebraska football is going to have a lot of successful seasons.

Go Big Red!
