The NCAA will now do their own investigation and determine if the self-imposed penalties by Ohio State will be sufficient.
I think the important point here is that NCAA still has an
investigation to do; this two-game suspension was an Ohio
State-imposed penalty. I've heard more than one sports commentator
say that this could lead to his resignation. The salient points are
that Tressel was made aware in April of 2010 that players had sold
material; his most recent comments say something to the effect that he
didn't know who he should contact, so he didn't contact anyone. When
the issue arose this last November/December through the Attorney
General on a totally unrelated issue, Tressel said then that he had
just been made aware of the players actions. Now, it appears that
Tressel knew about it, and didn't report it, in April, 7 months
earlier. So, 1) he was made aware of a violation and didn't report
it, and 2) he lied about knowing about it in November. This appears
to be a clear violation of his contract, and of the NCAA rules
regarding these matters.
Things may not be over for Mr. Tressel.
Now, I'm not wishing ill on Tressel or the Ohio State University. I
have nothing against them. But recently, the NCAA have been
criticized for being too lenient on violators (Reggie Bush and Cam
Newton's father), and it will be interesting if the NCAA wants to give
what may appear to be preferential treatment for a high-profile and
successful program.
