[Husker] Draft

It definitely has happened before. TCU's Matt Purke (though, he played
baseball in college, not football) turned down something like $4 mil a
couple years ago to play in college.
It obviously doesn't happen often, but it's not like it has never happened.
I think Bubba would probably have to set a record for largest signing bonus
rejected for an MLB draft pick to come to NU tho.

Wow, some very optimistic folks on this list. Or maybe delusional?
Are there very many other examples of a football/baseball prospect turning
down millions to play college football first? And without some sort of huge
insurance policy? Perhaps we are forgetting the risks associated with major
college football here?
I would be 100% SHOCKED if this kid turns down the baseball money for
football at NU- the parents and the kid himself can say whatever they want,
but let's be honest here, money talks. That said, I think Erstad (and how he
deals with the kid) will be a key factor in the decision.

Kathy, there's nothing wrong with that perspective and it seems Bubba's mom
is thinking the same thing.
On a side note, that combined with the life that is minor league baseball
(taking busses every day to small towns across the U.S.) is a very
'unglamorous' life and would make most 18 year olds very homesick.
All that being said, Bubba just doesn't seem like the guy that would go
crazy with the money. For example, the guy had plenty of options...so to
speak for his H.S. prom, but opted to go fishing instead. Just likes quiet,
simple pleasures and isn't the type of kid that's going to run out and get a
Bentley.
Good point tho. It certainly seems like his family wants him to go to NU.

This is most likely a completely dumb observation but honestly I would be
very leery of turning my 18 year old kid loose on his own with a pot of
money that he could do whatever he wanted with. I am just saying that as a
parent a little more time to mature, get out of the house in a more
controlled environment and some more education might not be such a bad
thing. Putting a kid in the position of thinking he owes it to his
parents/family to take the money no matter what is really a bad thing unless
the family is in dire straights - and some are.
I know there is a risk playing a sport - especially football in college,
injury etc but I don't know how much that kind of thing plays into the
thinking here. I am pretty much clueless about the pressures surrounding a
kid that is good enough at something to get a scholarship or play at a pro
level so there is no doubt lots that I am not factoring in. Just saying
that I would be pretty tense about the whole thing as a parent.
