[Husker] New Defensive Scheme (UNCLASSIFIED)

One thing I've found with the Pelini brothers is that they are flexible in their
approach, and can quickly adjust their scheme as necessary. Will Nebraska be
facing different schemes this year versus last? Absolutely. But the defense was
going to change this season anyway. Eric Hagg was a weapon as the nickel back
the last two years, but he's gone. Who would replace him? Austin Cassiday might
be a candidate, but he might be more useful at safety, replacing Dejon Gomes.
It's less of a question of the defensive line IMHO as it is with the
linebackers. I see Lavonte David likely assuming more of Eric Hagg's role, with
Will Compton being asked to step up and help stop the running game more,
especially against the likes of Wisconsin. Will Nebraska go with a third true
linebacker like Sean Fisher (and use David like they've used Hagg in past
seasons?), or move another safety up as a true nickel back? My guess is you'll
see a little of both, but I think Sean Fisher will probably be on the field more
often than not.
Also, look for a little creativity up front, such as bringing in Eric Martin as
a third defensive end and going with a 5-2 defense in certain situations. The
Pelini's did something similar at times with Cameron Meredith in 2009,
especially against Colorado.

Subject: [Husker] New Defensive Scheme (UNCLASSIFIED)
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: FOUO
All,
I was talking to my brother last night about the Huskers and he made a
very salient point about our defense. He is worried about the defensive
side of the ball due to defending different schemes. The defense of the
past was geared to stop the spread offense and now most of the Big 10
teams offense (except Michigan) use a power I combination. What do you
folks think? Will our front four be stout enough to handle Wisconsin's
running game?
