This is what interests me. How do you initiate that call?
"Hi, is this 590? OK, this is 1620 and we want FSR and we want you to take
ESPN. OK? Great."
810 WHB in K.C. is another ESPN affiliate that I don't understand paying the
fees. They are also very driven by local programming and paying the ESPN tax
just does not make sense. I think the syndicated weekend programming for FSR is
better, and frankly, I think the weekend programming for Sporting News Radio is
better. I'd rather listen to Sporting News Radio stuff half the time than the
network ESPN guys. SNR has some decent shows. I'm surprised 590 didn't go for
SNR to save money instead of ESPN.
On the national syndication stuff, I don't get FSR dumping Steve Czaban and
putting Steven A Smith on. I used to listen to FSR in the mornings when I was
tired of Mike-n-Mike. Now I just throw the SNR stream on my iPod while getting
ready in the AM to listen to Czab when I'm tired of M-n-M.

The "Schick & Nick" show is a local production, and will continue from 8 am to
11 am. The time change is to accomodate the Jim Rose show at 11 am.
"Unsportsmanlike Conduct" with Kevin Kugler and Mike'l Severe will be
unaffected, and will continue to run from 2 pm to 6 pm.
ESPN has been charging it's affiliates larger sums of money to carry ESPN Radio
programming, and since 1620 AM is primarily driven by their local programming (2
daily sports shows plus numerous local programs), the ESPN affiliation became
less attractive.
What's not known is what drove this decision: KOZN-1620 AM, KOSR-590 AM, or
ESPN Corporate. ESPN probably wasn't happy with many of their shows being
pre-empted, and KOSR has consistently ranked at the bottom of the local ratings
in recent years, and desperately needed something to justify keeping the
transmitter turned on.
