You know, I don't want to really argue this point, because its
basically pointless, but I looked at the score with about a minute to
play last night, and Auburn had exactly 19 points. Oddly, so did
Oregon. So, if the Auburn's defense was the star, was Oregon favored
to run up the score? No, actually, they were the dogs in this contest
and had been all week. Nobody thought they'd win it, so unless Auburn
outscores them, it doesn't happen. I guess I'm confused. While
Auburn's defense played very well, I'm not sure I'm awarding them any
prizes, at least not as many as maybe Oregon handed them last night.
I thought the "goat" of the game, if there is one, is the Oregon QB
who either badly misread several read options, or didn't bother to
read the option at all and predetermined what he was doing with the
ball. And after watching that, and thinking back to some of our games
this year, it began to look strangely similar. So, in the second half
of the season, did Martinez, who really handles the ball very well in
the read option, simply call his own number too many times? Or were
the reads correct and we just got stuffed.
Is there really a read in the read option? Or is it the flip of a
coin - heads I run, tails you run.
