[Husker] Dienhart: Watson to Louisville

Let's not forget that Nick Saban tried to hire Watson as his offensive
coordinator at Alabama three years ago, but Watson chose to stay at Nebraska.
I personally think Watson has taken too much abuse and the criticism of Watson
has been excessive. Not saying that Watson is completely blameless, but
Nebraska's offensive issues were more than just playcalling and offensive
design. Injuries and lack of depth really played larger roles than Watson
IMHO. (Yes, I am blaming the residual effects of Billy C, especially for some
of the problems in 2008 and 2009. Much less so in 2010, and that excuse is
pretty much dead going forward.)
Shawn Watson tried to make it work, perhaps out of a sense of loyalty to some of
his players or perhaps Tom Osborne. Or maybe it was to stay connected with his
son, who was a walkon on the team. Maybe it was to see if he could evolve and
grow as a coach to bring in different ideas. Whatever happened, it didn't work
out as well as we would have liked...so everybody moves on.

One thing I've been thinking about is that Watson never signed on to coach
under Bo. It's the same as the danger of sticking with the same job when
your company comes under new management. The job is nice, but your new boss
may have different expectations for you, which are not in line with your
skills. His personality also might not be the best match for yours.
We don't know how much these things affected Watson's job performance. It's
admirable that he stuck around and tried to make it work, I guess, but my
personal feeling is that Bo and Watson were not a good match. And that's not
even getting into the question of whether Watson has the skills to perform
in that job anyway (we've been over that enough!).
