I seriously doubt that Pelini has ever admitted to lying to the press using
those words or anything similar.

Deceiving them by allowing them to believe something that is not true (eg, not
correcting them) or telling them less than everything he knows, well, that's 
a separate issue.  Keep in mind that he is often limited in what he CAN tell
people, such as about recruits before they sign or about injuries.  

Are there writers (I refuse to call them journalists) who do the same,
ignoring certain known facts if they don't agree with the focus of their
article?  Absolutely.
