Shots at the big time don't easily come calling unless a coach has been
a standout defensive, offensive, or head coach. Working under TO, who
was also the offensive coach, Solich didn't get a chance to be a
standout offensive coach. As a coach, I think he did well, but was not
going to be considered a standout considering the expectations. And
being fired, no matter how unfair, does not help job prospects.
Still, Solich might have been considered by weaker schools in major
conferences if they thought he'd be interested. But I believe Solich
wasn't willing to relocate to just any city. And Ohio isn't a bad place
to land (MAC isn't a top conference, but it's still Div 1) and is a good
fit for Solich since he grew up there.
There's no evidence that Solich has or had a problem with booze and
given the scrutiny the Huskers are under, particularly in '95, even a
hint of such a problem almost certainly would have been publicized.
Though Solich was convicted of drunken driving in 2005, after police
spotted him nearly passed out in his car, he later had a hair analysis
test that suggested he had been slipped GHB at the bar where he was
drinking. Though we'll never know for sure, I believe Solich was
drugged given there are no other reported incidents and the one in
question was so extreme - it seems unlikely that someone would get so
drunk that they passed out, yet have no other incidents before or after.
