I believe that's out of 12,500 tickets. But keep in mind that Nebraska started taking orders from boosters in October. Every donor got a letter asking whether they were interested in any bowl games. A donor could have requested 6 tickets to the BCS title game, 4 to the Fiesta, 10 to the Rose, and 3 to the Pizza Bowl in Detroit. If Nebraska didn't get a bowl bid to the game you selected tickets for, you don't get anything.
I have nothing to base it on, mind you, but I figure that 5,000 of those tickets were sold prior to yesterday.

Out of how many? That's less than 18 hours after the game was announced,
so it isn't clear whether that's good or bad sales.
However, for the most part the bowl game tickets the teams are required
to sell are never in the best locations in the stadium, so it might be
possible to get much better seats on the open market, though
almost certainly at a higher price.
