I agree that lawyers should know about these option for folks that have made one mistake and seem unlikely to be headed down a road of crime. It saves the person from having a felony on their record, it saves the judicial system money, and the injured party is no worse off - they can still claim on the drivers insurance or pursue a civil case if I am not mistaken.
Working with young folks I have seen many of them do stupid things, things for which jail was possible. I am glad that judges can use some discretion. Some of the kids I am thinking of did diversion, stop class, probation, community service, or some combination of these. I know that the majority also understood they had made a dumb choice and learned from it. Hopefully that will be the case here.
