Hi Paul and thank you for your post. I've been giving this some more thought. What would make it a completely different situation is if our men and women in the armed forces DID consider it offensive to sing a different word at the end of the Star Spangled Banner. That is a whole different situation. If soldiers (and I use this term to include all branches of service) considered it offensive, then it IS offensive, even if not intended to be so. If it is taken as offensive, then it IS offensive. I am originally from South Carolina and was mortified during the whole flap about flying the confederate flag from the top of the state capitol. All these people would spout on and on about how it was just part of their heritage and not "intended" to be offensive to African-Americans. It doesn't matter....it IS offensive to a very large majority of African-Americans whether intended that way or not. Same goes here. If our soldiers feel it is
offensive and take it as offensive, then it should be stopped immediately.
Ok, climbing down from the pulpit before I bust a vein.

I've spent 17 years in uniform and lost good friends in combat. I really don't care what people sing at a ball game. It doesn't affect me in any way.

And since when does the "brave" mentioned at the end of the Star Spangled Banner refer to those in the armed forces? I've been singing that song a long time and I never remember thinking, never remember anyone at all saying or implying or teaching or explaining, that the "brave" means those in uniform. I contend the "brave' does not refer to our soldiers, it refers to all the people of the United States of America. You, me, our soldiers, our mothers and fathers, those who serve and those who don't. It's the "land of the free"...all of us, and the "home of the brave"....all of us. Some may dislike playing around with the last word, or any other word for that matter, of the National Anthem, but it is not a slight against our men and women in service. This is all bs, yes even you Coach Stoops.
