[Husker] Big XII Suspends Eric Martin for Mizzou Game

Call me a homer if you want, but I don't think it's an obvious suspension. That hit was what we used to call, a "decleater" back when football was actually a contact sport. A special team players celebrates those hits. I don't see anything wrong with that, either. The kid was moving his legs immediately after the hit (I was at the game). So Martin may have known that he was likely OK. Or maybe he didn't pay much attention other than the fact that he just destroyed the opponent on the play, which is usually the goal on every play.

Watch a highlight video of big Husker hits over the years and you'll see a bunch of hits by guys that according to this logic, should have been suspended.

Like I said in an earlier post, there is a confluence of about 4 to 5 reasons the suspension was handed down. And they aren't necessarily because this was an "obvious" helmet to helmet hit. I watched the replay several times in slo motion, too. There is an element of a helmet to helmet, but did he go in with his head down in a "spear-type" hit? I don't think so. As much as his helmet made contact with the player, so did his body. You can't tell me that Martin's head made up the majority of the contact. Plenty of his shoulder and body did and percentage wise, probably more. So, it's at least up for debate. It's not obvious. It's not flagrant. No flag was thrown. I'm saying those other 4 or 5 reasons given before add up to why the suspension was given. I'm not even that opposed to the suspension. But I think in different football times, without this confluence of events, it's not given. That's the part that's hard to swallow for this Husker fan.
