[Husker] Big XII Suspends Eric Martin for Mizzou Game

It's clear that the OSU player was a part of the immediate action and
had the ability to make a play so hitting the player was not a cheap
shot. The issue is how the player was hit.

If you don't view it in slow-mo or freeze it at the right frame, I don't
believe you can objectively claim how much was helmet or how much was
shoulder. But given how sharply the OSU's players head snaps back, even
at regular replay speed I would have guessed the hit was mostly helmet.

If you get the right frame you can clearly see it was the helmet that
hit the OSU player's chin. The question then is whether intent is
supposed to enter into the rules regarding suspensions (I believe
Martin knew what he was doing). I also wonder if a hit is considered
flagrant if the head was targeted regardless of whether it was the
helmet or shoulder (though I note that the suspension states that Martin
used his helmet).

I don't believe it was bias that led the commentator to proclaim it was
a dirty hit - at first glance, helmet-to -chin seems plausible. Also,
he is a color commentator and focusing on the more sensational parts of
the game is part of the job. I think charges of "yucking it up" are
speculative and therefore unfair, but this isn't the first time I've
heard such speculation.

I agree with the suspension, but it does surprise me if this is the
first suspension by the Big12 for such a hit. Are we certain about that?

Go Big Red!
Andy
