Wow, that's quite a schedule of games. I haven't been to a game in Evanston in
a number of years, but I'm thinking the 2012 Nebraska-Northwestern game might be
a good year to plan on attending one.
Northwestern has, IMHO, the prettiest cheerleaders in the Big Ten and the best
marching band. If the Northwestern band reminds you a bit of the Nebraska band,
that's not coincidental, former Nebraska director of bands Dr. Robert Fought
came to Lincoln in 1974 from Evanston, where he studied under the legendary
John P. Paynter. (The 'John P.' is John Phillip and, yes, he was named after
John Phillip Sousa.)
Prof. Paynter was an advocate of a band that sounds GOOD. "Any fool can play
LOUD", he often said, "It takes a good musician to play soft." His block drills
during the years I was at Northwestern were exercises in precision marching. His
parody of the 'Script Ohio' routine was one of the funniest things I've ever seen
during a halftime show.
