I seem to recall some sets that had red pieces in place of the white.  Since you 
don't see red pieces anymore, guess that edict came from the Big 12 office.

Several years ago the United States Chess Federation got a letter from
someone saying that the game contributed to racial tension, and suggested
that the rules be modified so that the black and white pieces move together
in the same direction.

At least now I know where that letter-writer went to, he's working for
the Big Ten office.
